Portable Room Air Conditioners Are A Good Alternative To Window Air Conditioners

Although portable room air conditioners were originally developed for commercial use, they have become very popular

in residential applications. They are very versatile and may be used in any room of your home. These units are best utilized in single room applications but can assist in cooling adjacent rooms if the load doesn't exceed the units rated capacity and air can flow freely between the rooms.

Portable room air conditioners have a few advantages over window air conditioners and are a good alternative when:

  1. You are unable to lift a window air conditioner to install it. Most portable air conditioners have wheels and can be easily moved from room to room without any lifting.

  2. There is no window available to mount a window air conditioner or the window is too high or just not suitable in some other way.

  3. Portable room air conditioners are a healthier choice for you if you have allergies and asthma. These units sit indoors, and are not exposed to damp conditions, which can breed mold and mildew inside traditional window air conditioners where water can sit for long periods of time.

  4. A portable room air conditioner will reduce or eliminate infiltration of outside air. This will depend on the type of unit you purchase.

Some portable ac units have remote controls and 24-hour programmable operation. This means that you can set it to come on before you get home from work or wherever you may be, and your room will be cooled when you get there. This reduces operating costs because you don't have to leave the unit operating all day

All air conditioners, portable, window, central or any other type of AC system, operate by removing heat from one space and rejecting that heat to another space. The part of the unit that rejects the heat is called a condenser. For window air conditioning units, the condenser is the part that is outside the window.

Portable air conditioner parts are basically the same as window air conditioner parts but everything is inside the room that you are trying to cool. To remove heat from the room, hot air is exhausted through a hose and out a window or vent.

Some units remove moisture through this same hose and some units have a drain tank that you will have to empty when it fills. When the tank fills a beep will let you know that it is time to empty it so you don't have to be concerned about forgetting. Some units also allow you to hook up a drain line for continuous drainage.

GE, Delonghi, Maytag, Soleus, LG, Fedders, Mitsubishi, Panasonic and Admiral all make good quality portable room air conditioners, some cheap and some not so cheap. Cheap can also translate into poor quality so it is best to shop for features instead of price.

When purchasing a portable room air conditioner, review the specs for the unit to be certain that it has the features that you are interested in. It is also very important to select the proper air conditioner size for the job that you require it to do. An oversized or undersized AC unit will not operate at optimum efficiency.
