Old House Air ConditioningOld house air conditioning can be a very challenging and involved process. Most of the difficulty is directly related to the design of older homes. Sometimes there is very little room to install duct systems. Because of this, duct sizes are often reduced to sizes that restrict airflow. Without sufficient airflow you are likely to get uneven temperatures throughout your house. A contractor who has some experience with this type of project should do old house air conditioning. He will have gained some valuable experience and insight from past projects that may help overcome problems that he will encounter in your home. If your home is only one level with a basement you will not likely encounter to many difficulties, but if is a two story or more you should search for somebody with proper credentials. This means getting references, and checking with these references. There are some important questions that you will want to ask. One of the most important questions you should ask when checking references of old house air conditioning contractors is; Are there any areas of your home that are either too warm or too cold when your air conditioning system is operating? This is an important question because rooms that are too hot or too cold indicate inadequate airflow to these rooms, which means one of two things. Old house air conditioning is something that the contractor is not experienced enough to do or there is no way to get enough air to that particular part of the house. To determine if the contractor didn't know or care about this potential problem area or if he was aware of it and there was just no work around, find out if it was brought to the attention of the home owners beforehand. If it was brought up during conversation then this is a good indication that the contractor was knowledgeable because he new beforehand that it was going to be a problem and there was no solution. If it was a surprise and not mentioned beforehand then the contractor either didn't know about the potential problem, which makes indicates a lack of knowledge on his part or he knew and didn't care enough to bring it to the homeowner's attention. In either case this is not someone you want working in your old house and installing an air conditioning system. Installing heating and airconditioning systems for old homes can take longer and cost more than in modern homes because of unique problems that can be encountered in older homes. Old house air conditioning sometimes takes some creative thinking on the part of your contractor but almost every problem has a solution. |
